Yep, there's a formula to it!

• The most important factor in prompting to receive a personal response

• The magic of directing the output format for tailored responses

Alright then, let’s jump in!

1. Context matters

Begin by setting the scene.

Are you a beginner cook looking for a recipe or a software developer seeking coding advice?

Your context guides ChatGPT in understanding your background and needs.

Here is an example:

I am a 23-year-old consultant at Meta. I have worked there for 2 years and have a bachelor’s degree in software engineering from Harvard University.

(I have no idea if this makes sense, but you get the point 😊)

The more details you provide, the better ChatGPT will understand your situation and, in return, provide you with more personal responses.

2. Be specific

Vague questions lead to vague answers. If you have a specific purpose or goal in mind, make it clear.

Instead of asking about "dog breeds," ask about "small dog breeds suitable for apartment living."

Or if you're helping a fifth-grader with homework, ask ChatGPT to "explain quantum physics so that a fifth-grader can understand it."

The more details you provide, the closer you get to your desired answer.

Again, clarity along with specific details is really important; don’t be lazy when you provide your instructions!

3. Provide examples

Providing examples to ChatGPT is like showing an image of your desired house to a builder.

Helping ChatGPT understand what kind of examples you are looking for is key.

This is very powerful for a number of reasons:

1. You can use the tone of the examples provided to train ChatGPT

2. You can completely copy the format of a text by simply providing an example

All you have to do is write:

And you are good to go!

P.S. If you would, for example, only want to use a specific thing from the example text, like formatting, just write something like:

4. Experiment and Iterate 

If the first response isn't quite right, don't hesitate to rephrase your question or ask follow-up questions.

Sometimes the prompt might not give you the answers you want.
